Have you ever tried to BBQ plank a steak? The key is to get a quick sear on the steak before transferring it to a BBQ plank to absorb some smoky-woody goodness.

  • 11 x 5.25" Red Oak BBQ grill plank (you can also try a Hickory or Cedar plank
  • 1 x 350 – 400 g bone in beef rib eye steak
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

  1. Soak Red Oak BBQ grill plank in water for at least one hour.  (We’ve used Red Oak but beef in general also pair wonderfully with hickory or cedar)
  2. Preheat BBQ to High (260ºC).
  3. If using a charcoal BBQ place the coals on just one side and use the other side only, when cooking. If using a gas BBQ light one side.
  4. Brush the steak with olive oil and season well with salt and pepper.
  5. Place steak on the BBQ grill to sear and do not move for 3 minutes.
  6. While the steak is searing, preheat the plank by placing it on the BBQ. After 3 minutes turn the plank over, and place the steak, seared side up on the plank.
  7. Keep a spray bottle of water to douse flare-ups!
  8. Close the BBQ lid to trap the smoke and cook for about 5 minutes for a medium rare smoked rib eye steak.

And there you have it, a BBQ plank grilled steak.
